Oils + Hair

Hi guys!! Okay so my love affair with oils run deep and I use them for absolutely everything. Using them on my hair has been an absolute GAME CHANGER. My hair has never ever been this healthy. I probably say that 234 times throughout this article.

A little background, I have naturally curly hair so it’s natural state is a bit dry. I wear my hair both straight and curly on the reg so I am pretty accustomed to caring for both.

Sit back, grab a cup of wine and enjoy the knowledge.

The [infamous] Mermaid Spray

Praise the Lord and thank you Jesus for whoever figured this recipe out. HOLY SHIT. It is the perfect combination of oils to have your hair growing thicker, shinier and FAST.

Great scalp health promotes hair growth. Simple as that, your hair won’t grow if you aren’t taking care of your scalp.

Make this and spray on your scalp morning and night, wet or dry.

Mermaid Spray//
20 drops of lavender + 20 drops of cedarwood + 20 rosemary + 15 clary sage + 15 peppermint + 15 thyme + witch hazel + distilled water in a spray bottle. Spray in dry or wet hair!

CBD Scalp Treatment + Mermaid Serum ⁣

Hair washing day? If you’re like me and wash twice a week then do this every time you wash. If you wash everyday or every other, just do this twice a week. That’s alll ya need.⁣

CBD Scalp Treament: ⁣
One whole dropper of CBD cool mint⁣
10 drops of peppermint⁣
2 tbsp castor oil in a dropper bottle⁣

Mermaid Serum: ⁣
Full dropper of CBD
20 drops of lavender⁣
20 drops of cedarwood⁣
20 rosemary⁣
15 clary sage⁣
15 peppermint⁣
15 thyme⁣
Castor oil ⁣
[exact ingredients as the mermaid spray but instead of water and witch hazel you use castor oil since it is thicker and acts as a mask]⁣

⁣Mirah Lustrous Hair Oil⁣

Straight Hair: Apply when wet before you blow dry or let air dry.⁣

Curly Hair: Apply when wet and dry as needed.⁣

I used to use Moroccan oil all the time but this stuff is so much better. So what I recommend is not using this anywhere near your scalp because even I – with dry hair – cannot. It’s oil so obviously it’ll make your scalp greasy. ⁣

Dosage//⁣

Start with a quarter dropped on your ends while your hair is wet, before you blow or air dry. I use 3/4 dropper when I am wearing my hair curly and 1/4 dropper on the ends if I am blow drying it straight. In the winter when my hair gets super dry I will reapply to the ends in between washes. Feels like such a dream and keeps the end from breaking off.⁣

Ylang Ylang⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This oil is traditionally used in hair formulas to promote thick, shiny, lustrous hair. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Ummmmmmmm yes.

⑊So what I do is apply roughly 2-5 drops in my palms and rub together. I then close my palms with my hair in between from top to bottom. ⁣⁣

⑊ Curl refreshing spray: ylang ylang + lavender + water for in between washes!

⑊ This oil is also known to be used to prevent hair loss so if you want to add it to your Mermaid Spray that would be a great idea! ⁣⁣

Dandruff⁣

Tea tree, thyme and lemongrass ⁣

What I do is put these oils into a dropper bottle and apply to my scalp before the shower orrr I’ll just drop them on my head neat. I rubbbb and scratch my scalp while these oils soak on there so I can rid the buildup and dandruff that is there just waiting to land on your shoulders mid day. Gross + for some reason embarrassing all at the same time.

YL has three different shampoo and conditioner options depending on your hair needs- these can be mixed and matched for your preferences

◖ Lavender- gentle cleanses and nourishes fine hair to reduce product buildup and create maximum volume
◖ Lavender Mint – can I just pause here and say HOW GOOD this one SMELLS! This one is a great clarifying shampoo and great for all hair types
◖ Last is the Copaiba Vanilla – which provides cleansing and moisturizing for dry, damaged hair. I’ve seen this recommended often for curls / thick hair and sample sizes of this come in the Bon Voyage Kit! Fun!

Need more from a shampoo or conditioner ??
↪Additional oils can be added based on your hair needs – for example you can add lavender, rosemary, and Cedarwood to your conditioner instead of using mermaid growth spray.

The Curly Journey

I have fought the good fight with this hair of mine. My mom doesn’t have these locks (thanks, Dad) so growing up she would brush it. All my fellow curlies are definitely cringing at the thought of brushing through dry, curly hair. In the end you look like Ludacris on the cover of his Word of Mouf CD holding the angry pit bull. As I grew old enough to do my own hair and buy my own products, I had to learn how to handle this situation on my own.

Don’t get it twisted, I was in straight denial that my hair was curly and would straighten it every single day for years and years. Even colored it blonde which was terrible for my already dry, brittle strands. It wasn’t until 2016 that I finally embraced my inner afro. I’m telling you it was a long road to figure out how to style and what was right for me, but to date my hair is the healthiest it’s been since I was a toddler and it’s only getting better with the right routine and products.

Why going natural is the best route (for me):

  • I no longer have to apply heat to my hair on a daily basis
  • I can get my hair wet at the beach or a pool and not live in fear of how it’s going to dry
  • My morning routine is cut in half
  • Literally never have to wash my hair
  • Even a top knot looks good with a crown of curls

Now here are the rules when you’re dealing with a head of curls. Not all curls are the same, but the rules remain consistent across the board:

  • Use sulfate free hair products and only wash once or twice a week.
  • When you are not shampooing you can still use your conditioner in your bathing routine. Don’t rinse out all of the conditioner. You need all the moisture you can get.
  • Do not use a bath towel to dry your hair, use a microfiber towel or a cotton T shirt.
  • Comb, never brush, while wet (always while wet). Like I said, you mess with dried curls they’re just going to retaliate *cough Ludacris*.
  • Sleep with a silk wrap around your head (LOL I am so serious). Replace your pillow case with a silk one. This prevents rubbing and frizzing while you toss throughout the night.
  • Always use a diffuser while blow-drying, if you even are blow-drying. Heat settings on low and cold or else, Luda.
  • Whenever you can, hair mask it up. I use one when I work out, when I clean the house and every Sunday when I don’t have to leave the house.
  • Add some rosemary, eucalyptus, lavender and tea tree to all of your hair products. This has worked wonders on my locks.
  • Use a curl cream concoction (whichever works best for you) I love my MoroccanOil Curl Cream and a little of Mirah Lustrous hair oil from Young Living.

Young Living products and DIYS to bring your mane back.

  • Mirah Lustrah Hair Oil. Add it when wet and apply to ends when dry.
  • Mermaid spray: 20 drops of lavender + 20 drops of cedarwood + 20 rosemary + 15 clary sage + 15 peppermint + 15 thyme + witch hazel + distilled water in a spray bottle. Add this to your hair wet or dry. Watch it grow wider and longer. SO GOOD FOR YOUR LOCKS
  • Leave-in Serum: so the once a week you wash your hair, apply this serum all over your bean head. Spray the mermaid spray all over your head, apply castor oil and copiaba conditioner to the ends and leave in top knot.
  • YL Copiaba shampoo + conditioner. MADE for our type of hair.

Now go out there and rock that fro baby. Do not give up on your curls!
